Unlocking the Mystery of Hair Loss: A Naturopathic Approach

Hair loss has become an increasingly common concern for my patients, especially in the last three years. Hair loss is, understandably, a very emotional symptom. However, first it is important to understand that hair loss does naturally ebb and flow and a natural loss of 60-100 hairs a day can be a normal occurrence. That being said, if you are one of the many people that are noticing that your locks are not as luscious as they used to be, here are some potential causes and naturopathic treatment options.

Hair loss has become an increasingly common concern for my patients, especially in the last three years.

The Hormone Havoc:

First, let’s talk about hormones because they often play a starring role in the hair loss drama. Hormonal imbalances or any fluctuations, such as those related to pregnancy/postpartum, menopause, or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), can lead to hair thinning or loss. I have also seen hair loss associated with fertility treatments such as IUI and IVF. These sneaky hormones can sometimes wreak havoc on our hair follicles.

Naturopathic Tip: Our approach here involves identifying and addressing the root cause of hormonal imbalances. When these causes are identified, tools such as herbal supplements, homeopathy, acupuncture, dietary adjustments or sometimes bio-identical hormone replacement can help restore hormonal harmony and promote hair regrowth.

Nutritional Needs:

Your hair is a reflection of your overall health, and if your body is deficient in particular nutrients, your hair might suffer the consequences. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in iron, biotin, zinc, and vitamins like B and D, can lead to hair loss.

Naturopathic Tip: We’re all about nourishing your body naturally. We will be able to identify any nutritional deficiencies with lab work and work together to create a plan to replace these nutrients in the most absorbable way possible. A nutrient rich diet, supplements and herbal remedies can be recommended based on your specific needs.

Thyroid Troubles:

The thyroid, a small but mighty gland in your neck, can be a sneaky culprit in the hair loss saga. When it’s out of whack, with either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, hair issues can rear their ugly head.

Naturopathic Tip: We’ll assess your thyroid function through comprehensive testing and offer natural thyroid support, which may include thyroid or adrenal supporting herbs and supplements, lifestyle changes, dietary modifications or even thyroid replacement to help restore your thyroid to its happy place.

The Stress Showstopper:

Stress (the culprit of many health concerns) can lead to hair loss or exacerbate existing issues. Stress can consist of physical trauma such as an injury or surgery or emotional stress which can range from a severe emotional trauma to being overwhelmed and overworked. Our bodies can signal distress through our hair health.

Naturopathic Tip: Some stress hormones can be identified though lab work which can help map out a plan. Regardless, if there has been a major stressor in your life, taking the time for self- care and stress management is key. We’ll explore relaxation techniques, counseling, and herbal remedies that help you regain your inner calm and keep your hair firmly rooted where it belongs.

The COVID Connection:

In the era of COVID-19, I’ve seen many cases of hair loss linked to the infection itself or in the months following the infection in post co-vid syndrome or long co-vid. In these cases, hair loss usually starts 1-3 months following a co-vid infection and usually lasts about 3 months, sometimes unfortunately longer.

Naturopathic Tip: This is the trickiest hair loss to treat because the reason why a co-vid infection causes hair loss is not known. When this is the suspected cause, symptomatic support such as herbal adaptogens, mineral replacement, or immune support that is used in long co-vid protocols may help lessen the loss.

Remember, hair loss can be a complex puzzle, but with the naturopathic approach, we aim to address the underlying causes rather than just treating the symptoms. We’ll work together to design a personalized plan that nurtures your body, mind, and, of course, your beautiful hair.
