What is Reiki and Who Can it Help?

Simple and Safe!

Reiki is a simple, safe, and effective form of energy healing that activates the parasympathetic nervous system to stimulate healing of body and mind. The therapy originated in Japan and the word Reiki stems from the Japanese words “rei” meaning universal, and “ki” meaning vital life force energy. This is similar to the concept of Qi in Chinese medicine or Prana in yogic philosophy. The theory is that when our vital life energy is low, we are more susceptible to becoming ill and feeling unwell, while if our vital life energy is full we are more likely to feel well mentally and physically. To address this, the reiki practitioner acts as a conduit through which the universal life force energy flows to the person receiving the treatment. While we don’t know for sure exactly how Reiki works, studies have shown that it can provide benefit to a wide variety of people. It doesn’t act as a replacement for medical care, but it is an excellent addition to other forms of treatment.

For anyone and everyone!

The great news is that anyone and everyone can receive reiki! It is safe for people of all ages and from all walks of life. If you can’t make it into the clinic, it’s even possible to do distance reiki from the comfort of your home. During the treatment, the recipient will lie fully clothed on a comfortable surface, close their eyes and focus on their breath. The Reiki practitioner either places their hands directly on the recipient or hovering over their body and will move to different positions throughout the session.

Most people experience a sense of peace, calmness, and/or relaxation during the session and many become so relaxed that they even fall asleep! This sense of wellbeing tends to linger on for the rest of the day and sometimes even longer. You will likely need more frequent treatments at first, and after time the sessions can be spaced further apart.

Reiki can be used in conjunction with other treatments for any ailment of the body, mind, or spirit. Dr. Goelz frequently uses it as part of her treatment protocol for patients suffering from anxiety, depression, PTSD, insomnia, chronic stress, and many other forms of emotional distress. Studies have found it can even be effective in treating chronic pain. In today’s stressful world, setting aside time to prioritize self care and relaxation can be an amazing act of self love.
